Sketches of Redemption

Genesis, the first book of the Bible, not only introduces us to the nature and character of God, it provides sketches of the redemption to come. It is the origin story of God’s redemptive love for a broken world. In its pages, we see vivid sketches of the gospel long before Christ comes in flesh. From Eden to Egypt, Genesis reveals patterns of sin, grace, and salvation that point forward to Jesus. Each story—whether of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, or others—offers a glimpse of the Redeemer to come and invites us to trust God’s redemptive hand in our own stories.

This Sunday, Pastor Logan continued our Sketches of Redemption series, turning to Genesis 12 and the call of Abraham. God’s invitation to Abraham was both costly and full of promise—calling him to leave the familiar and trust the unknown. Through Abraham’s story, we see that faith begins with a willingness to go where God leads, to receive His promises, and to live as a blessing to others.

This Sunday, our own Daniel Kunkel walked us through Genesis 11 and the story of the Tower of Babel, uncovering three lies humanity still believes today: that God is not enough, that we are not enough, and that God’s plan for us is not enough. Just like those who built the tower, we often try to “reach heaven” on our own—seeking control, recognition, or comfort—rather than receiving what God has already given through Christ.

This Sunday, Pastor Logan walked us through Genesis 6–9, exploring the story of Noah and the flood as a picture of God’s justice, mercy, and redemption. While we often focus on the unanswered questions of the ark, the heart of the story is God’s grace — that before Noah ever acted, he first received favor from the Lord.

This Sunday, our own Daniel Kunkel walked us through a passage in Genesis 4, reminding us of the story of Cain and Abel and the heart behind true worship. While Cain offered sacrifice out of self-interest, Abel gave by faith, pointing us to the truth that God desires not empty rituals, but hearts surrendered in humility and love.

This week we continued in our Sketches of Redemption series looking closely at Genesis 3. In these verses, Adam and Eve thought the fruit offered to them would taste like freedom, wisdom, and life—but instead it brought bondage, shame, and death. East of Eden, we still wrestle with the same realities.

While Genesis 1 shows us who we are—people made in God’s image—Genesis 2 reveals why we are here: to live fully alive in relationship with our Creator. Formed from the dust yet filled with His breath, we are called to meaningful work and to embrace both God’s gifts and His boundaries. This passage reminds us that the true life we long for—abundant, joyful, and free—comes not from self-rule but from life with God at the center.

This Sunday, we began a new series in the book of Genesis called Sketches of Redemption that will trace the origin story of God’s redemptive love for a broken world. From the very first words, “In the beginning, God…,” we are reminded that our lives are part of a bigger story—one centered on a loving Creator who delights in His world and in us.
